When Should You Upgrade Quicken?

Some users prefer to upgrade Quicken every year to stay on top of the latest features and bug fixes. Unless you really want that latest new features, we don’t believe it is necessary to upgrade every year. For most users, we recommend upgrading Quicken if either of these scenarios applies to you:

  • Your current version of Quicken is more than 3 years old
  • or

  • You have have upgraded to Windows 10 or Mac OS X El Capitan

Why upgrade Quicken?

Some features of Quicken will continue to work indefinitely, but a few major features stop working after 3 years.

One of the most useful features of Quicken is the ability to download bank and investment account transactions. Unfortunately, this is one of the features that stops working after 3 years. If you want to continue downloading and syncing bank transactions, you’ll have to upgrade after this feature expires. If you get the newest version of Quicken now, you won’t have to upgrade again until April three years from now.

One of the best new features in Quicken is the credit monitoring and alerts to help you avoid identity theft. You can see your current credit score for free every quarter until the three years is up. Once again, this is a feature that expires after 3 years, so if you like using it, you’ll have to upgrade.

If you are running Windows 10 or Mac OS X El Capitan, older versions of Quicken may no longer work properly with your operating system. The newest version of Quicken is compatible with Windows 10 and with Mac OS X El Capitan. If you are running one of these newer operating systems, we recommend upgrading to the latest Quicken release.

But what about all the data you currently have in Quicken? Don’t worry. As long as you upgrade from Quicken 2010 or newer, you’ll be able to import all of your data into the latest versions of Quicken (Deluxe edition and up).

Ready to Upgrade?

  • I have the 2017 version of Quicken Deluxe. I was ready to upgrade but now Quicken automatically renews membership yearly. I don’t want to renew every year. Is this something new? Any way around it?

  • My ‘old’ version of Quicken works fine, except for one thing that I know of…
When I want to do a bill every other month, there is no option for that, only monthly, quaarterly, yearly. No ‘every other month” or “every two months”
Does the ‘new’ version fix that?

  • I have a 2004 version of Quicken and I only use it as a checkbook. It stopped working today and I don’t understand why it would matter since I don’t download anything to Quicken

  • Been using Quicken for years, I find that I prefer not to use online features for my home and business quicken. I was greatly disappointed with the program last Saturday, when I was locked out of the program because my expired subscription and an error message that I did not understand. I was not able to get and answer on my question, so I decided to buy online the Delux Version and to my shagrin it would not dounload. I do not want to be pinned down to a subscription. I do not need all the features of the Home, Business & Rental Property. I use the program mostly for check writing and record keeping. Should I have the credit card company stop payment on my order. Due to my current circumstances, I am trying to simplify my life and expenses.
