A lot of people are preparing and filing their own tax returns. This is becoming even more common now that e-filing is by far the most prevalent way people file their returns.
There are a plethora of tax return products on the market, each promising to give tax payers the “Biggest Refund” and a “100% Accuracy Guarantee”. And each of these products comes with a price tag. You have to pay up to file your own tax return, but it’s usually less expensive than paying someone else to prepare and file it for you.
Some of these do-it-yourself tax preparation tools can cost over $100 after all the extra fees they tack on. The hard part is they don’t always tell you up front what you’ll have to pay. You get halfway through preparing your return and find out you have to “upgrade” in order to get that obscure form you need.
There are often additional fees for e-filing your federal return, fees for preparing a state tax return, and even more fees to e-file the state tax return.
Then there are the add-on services. These “extras” can include things like guaranteed audit support or live phone support. You can also pay extra to have a certified tax specialist look over your return.
All these extra services can really add up, gnawing away at your tax refund or adding even more fees on top of your tax bill.
But now there is a way to prepare and e-file your federal tax return for free. And it’s really free. Not just for a basic or “simple” return. All major tax situations are supported. This is for almost any personal income tax return, whether you have dependents, own a home, are self-employed, or have investments. This product covers all these situations for free.
You can prepare and e-file your federal tax return for free.
What’s the catch? There’s a very small fee ($12.95) if you need to prepare and file a state tax return. That’s it.
You can also add extra support (called Deluxe support) for just $6.99. This includes Live Chat, Priority Support, Audit Assist, and Unlimited Amended Returns.
So at the end of the day, even if you get the full package with all the support you can get, you’re paying less than $20. That includes preparing and e-filing your federal return, preparing and e-filing your state return, and adding the “Deluxe” package with all the support you could possibly need.
And if you don’t need to file a state return and don’t want the live chat and priority support, your federal return is completely free. Even for more complex situations.
But what if you used TurboTax or H&R Block or TaxAct last year? Isn’t all your information stuck with them?
No! That’s one of the best parts about this product. You can import last year’s return from TurboTax, H&R Block, or TaxAct and it’s still FREE!
